Power Integrations Debuts New DPA-Switch Family

June 25, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Power Integrations Inc. (San Jose, CA) announced its revolutionary new IC that simplifies dc/dc power conversion design. The DPA-Switch is the first highly integrated, high-voltage, power-conversion IC designed specifically for use in dc/dc converters and distributed power architectures (DPAs), according to the company. Applications for the DPA-Switch include networking and telecommunications line cards, brick dc/dc converter modules, digital feature and VoIP phones, PC servers, and industrial controls.

The IC eliminates up to 50 external components from the design of a typical discrete dc/dc converter, resulting in a shorter design cycle, smaller board size, lower system cost and higher reliability. The four-device family covers a wide input-voltage range of 16V to 75V, targeting 24V/48V applications. It is capable of delivering continuous output power of up to 100W. The DPA-Switch cost-effectively combines a 200V power MOSFET, PWM controller and fault-protection circuitry onto a single CMOS chip. The internal power MOSFET features industry-leading switching speeds.

Using three user-configurable pins, the DPA-Switch can be configured to allow line sensing (input under-voltage detection/over-voltage shutdown and variable maximum-duty cycle), accurate externally set current limit, remote on-off, synchronization to an external lower frequency, and a user-selectable 300kHz or 400kHz switching frequency. Additional built-in features include internal soft-start, cycle skipping at light load for high standby efficiency, integrated overload/open-loop protection, and internal hysteretic thermal shutdown for automatic fault recovery.

Pricing for the DPA-Switch family in 1,000-piece quantities ranges from $2.76 each for the 18W-rated DPA423R-TL, to $5.76 each for the 100W-rated DPA426R-TL. All parts are housed in the TO-263 package and are shipped in reels of 750 units. Sample quantities are available from stock with production quantities available in six weeks ARO.
