Power Integrations Adds TOP250 IC

January 22, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Power Integrations Inc. (San Jose, CA) announced the availability of the new TOP250 monolithic switcher IC that delivers an unprecedented 290W of output power. The TOP250, the newest power device in the TOPSwitch-GX family, is available in through-hole and surface-mount package options, including the industry-standard TO-220 (TOP250Y), a low-profile TO-262 (TOP250F) and a surface-mountable TO-263 (TOP250R-TL), also known as D2PAK. Applications for the TOP250 include small servers, digital TVs and audio amplifiers.

The TOP250 delivers the same power supply design benefits of reduced size, high standby efficiency and lower system cost offered by the initial products in the TOPSwitch-GX family. A versatile feature set and uniform design enables power supply designers to create cost-effective solutions for any application up to 290W. The initial TOPSwitch-GX family is a monolithic high-voltage IC family that integrates a high-voltage power MOSFET, PWM control, fault protection and other control circuitry onto a single CMOS chip. Built-in features include soft-start for minimum overshoot and lower component stresses at start-up, frequency jittering for low EMI, under-voltage protection and over-voltage shutdown, programmable current limit, and the company's energy-saving EcoSmart technology.

Pricing for the new TOPSwitch-GX devices in 1,000-piece quantities is $3.29 each for the TOP250Y or TOP250F and $3.32 each for the TOP250R-TL surface-mount package. Sample quantities are now available from stock with production quantities available in four weeks ARO.
