ON Semiconductor Introduces Resonant Mode Controller for Switch Mode Power Supplies

May 18, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

ON Semiconductor introduced the NCP1396 – a high performance resonant mode controller featuring built-in high side and low side MOSFET drivers. The device is said to enable the compact design of reliable and highly efficient power supplies for a variety of applications, including flat panel display power converters, high power density ac-dc adapters, industrial power sources and game consoles. The unique architecture of the NCP1396 includes a 500kHz Voltage Controlled Oscillator.

Because it is important to stay away from the resonating peak in resonant topologies, to keep operating the converter in the right region, the NCP1396 features an adjustable and accurate minimum switching frequency. Supported by proprietary high voltage technology, this controller welcomes a bootstrapped MOSFET driver for half bridge applications accepting bulk voltages up to 600V. An adjustable dead time helps to fight cross-conduction between the upper and the lower transistor and also insures Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) operation for the primary switches under all load conditions. A skip-cycle mode can be easily implemented to improve standby power and no-load operation efficiency.

The NCP1396 offers enhanced protection with multiple protection features that contribute to a safer converter design, without engendering additional circuitry complexity. Among the enhanced protection features of the NCP1396 are broken feedback loop detection, fast and slow events inputs, and brown-out detection to avoid operation from a low input voltage.

Designed for a variety of power supply applications, the NCP1396 is available in two versions. NCP1396A is designed for high power consumer applications and the NCP1396B is ideal for power industrial supplies. The NCP1396 updates the NCP1395 as a key component in ON Semiconductor’s open GreenPoint™ reference design for 220W LCD-TV power supplies.

Offered in an SOIC-16 package, the NCP1396 is priced at $1.60 per unit in 2,500 unit quantities. The NCP1396 will soon be offered in a PDIP-16 package.
