Murata’s 150W And 250W DC-DC Converters Offer 12, 24, or 54 Volt Outputs

February 09, 2021 by Gary Elinoff

Optimized for Railway and Industrial applications, both devices operate over a 10 to 1 input range of 16 to 160 VDC

The two new series of encapsulated converter modules can operate in harsh environments and deliver full power over their exceptionally wide voltage input ranges. The extremely large variation in acceptable inputs means that one inventoried device has the potential to serve in many different designs for an OEM.

Murata’s half-brick* sized 250 watt IRH-W80 series and its quarter-brick** dimension 150W IRQ-W80 series feature efficiency levels in the 90% range over their entire input range. Each series features 3 members, with each offering one of the specified output voltages of 12, 24, or 54 volts.

At the time of this writing, for both the 150 watt and 250 watt series, the 24 and 54 volt versions are currently under development, and not yet available.

Main Features of Both Series

These modules can all be remotely turned on or off. They feature resistor programmable undervoltage lockouts and adjustable current limits and also include protections, largely hiccup mode, against overtemperature and external short circuit.

Output voltages can be adjusted to within ±10% from the specified 12, 24, or 54 volt values.

They all feature hold up times ranging between 10 and 30 ms. Hold up time is defined as how long the output voltage stays to within 5% of its specified value when the input voltage falls below its specified minimum.

Maximum continuous operating input voltage is 160 VDC, and the units can take 170 VDC for a maximum of 100 ms.

There is 3000 VRMS reinforced isolation, and 4242 VDC input to output reinforced isolation

The 150W IRQ-W80 Series

  • Maximum operating input current at 100% load, 16 volt input voltage is 12 amps
  • Maximum no-load input current at 72 volts input is 60 mA
  • Line and load regulation are both ±0.5% responding to a 50% load step
  • Output Voltage Ripple and Noise are 160 mV peak-to-peak and 50 mv RMS, both at maximum
  • Input to output isolation resistance and capacitance are 20 mΩ and 750 pF, respectively
  • Typical switching frequency is 210 kHz

The 250 watt IRH-W80 Series

  • Maximum operating input current at 100% load, 16 volt input voltage is 20 amps
  • Maximum no-load input current at 72 volts input is 90 mA
  • Line and load regulation for a 50% load step are both ±0.2%
  • Output Voltage Ripple and Noise are typically 150 mV peak-to-peak and 30 mv RMS, respectively
  • Input to output isolation resistance and capacitance are 20 mΩ and 500 pF, respectively
  • Typical switching frequency is 240 kHz
