Monolithic Power Presents MP2106 Buck Regulator

June 06, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Monolithic Power Systems Inc. (MPS, Los Gatos, CA), a semiconductor manufacturer, announced its new MP2106, a 1.5 A synchronous buck regulator operating at 800 kHz. With a wide operating input-voltage range from 2.6 V to 13.5 V and adjustable output voltage as low as 0.9 V, the MP2106 is suitable for supplying core power needs from poorly regulated wall adapters. Other suitable applications include core supply for FPGAs, point-of-load regulation, set-top boxes, portable entertainment systems, wireless access points and network routers.

The 800 kHz switching frequency and integrated FETs of the MP2106, combined in a tiny 10-pin MSOP or QFN (3 mm x 3 mm) package, results in a compact footprint operating at greater than 90% efficiency. Typical operating current is 1.2 mA; reduced to just 1 µA in shutdown. External compensation ensures that the MP2106 is stable with ceramic or tantalum capacitors. The operating ambient temperature range is -40 °C to +85 °C. The MP2106 also features cycle-by-cycle current limit, under-voltage lockout, thermal shutdown and externally adjustable soft start.

Samples are now available from stock. Pricing for the MP2106 begins at $1.44 in 1,000-piece quantities.
