Molicel Announces New IMR26700 Li-Ion Cell

January 17, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

E-One Moli Energy Ltd. (Molicel, Vancouver, BC, Canada), a subsidiary of E-One Moli Energy Corp. (Taiwan), announced a new high-power, lithium-ion (Li-Ion) cell for high-rate applications, the IMR26700, which are suitable for laptop computers, electric bicycles, power tools, and electric or hybrid-electric vehicles.

The 3 Ah IMR26700 cell uses lithium-manganese oxide (LiMN204) in the positive electrode, which allows for a Li-Ion cell with higher discharge rates. The IMR26700 cell can deliver currents in excess of 100 A. By eliminating cobalt from the IMR26700 cell, it is possible to produce a much larger cell, while providing safety. Further developments of the IMR26700 cell will provide fast charge capability, allowing cells to be fully charged in as little as 15 minutes.

The new IMR26700 cell features a diameter of 26.4 mm, a length of 70 mm, a weight of 100 g, capacity of 3 Ah, a standard charging voltage of 4.2 V and 2.5 V, an energy density of 285 Wh/L, and a power density of 1,500 W/kg at 20 seconds.
