Microsemi Intros New LX8816 LDO Regulator

July 31, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Microsemi Corp. (Irvine, CA) announced a new dual-channel, low dropout regulator (LDO) targeted at low-voltage, high-current, power management applications that include CD-ROM and hard disk drives, ADSL and cable modems, battery-charging circuits, and wide-ranging instrumentation and PC peripheral products. Designated the LX8816, the new device provides two outputs of up to 1A, both independently regulated for accurate voltages, typically ±1 percent of specified values. One output channel is at a fixed voltage and one is adjustable.

The design of the LX8816 is optimized for system efficiency, consuming minimal ground current and directing quiescent current to the load. A bi-polar output transistor provides a low dropout voltage even at a full output current. Typical dropout is 1.2V at 1A and 1.1V at 500mA. The supply voltage can range from 4.3V to 10V.

The LX8816, packaged in a low-profile, five-pin, S-PAK, surface-mount package, is priced at $0.76 in 10,000-unit quantities. It is available for immediate sampling and delivery.
