Macroblock Introduces DC-DC Converter For High Power LED Lighting

New Products Apr 16, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

Macroblock introduced the 1.2A constant current buck dc-dc converter, the MBI6650, for high power LED lighting applications. By means of constant current mode hysteretic PFM design, the converter is described as answering the urgent call for traditional voltage mode dc-dc converter replacement since LED applications should be powered by current source.

Applying constant current, the hysteretic PFM control scheme is said to enhance system stability and to optimize power efficiency up to 90% at heavy loading and even 85% at light loading. By comprising the features of adaptive output switching frequency and an audio frequency skip, both higher current and frequency can be reached as well as preventing customers from noise interruption when the MBI6650 is activated.

The MBI6650 is built with only 4 external components required and therefore successfully minimizes the PCB layout area. The design is available to operate over an input of 9 to 36V for high power LED applications. With full protection, the MBI6650 enhances power dissipation with a thermal pad in a TO-252-5L package.
