Linear Technology Announces the New LT1612 Step-Down DC/DC Converter

July 16, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced the LT1612, a synchronous 800kHz step-down dc/dc converter. With a high operating frequency, MSOP package and minimal external part count, the LT1612 is designed for use in any portable device that operates from a lithium-ion or two-cell alkaline battery.

The LT1612's synchronous operation eliminates the Schottky diode needed by most other regulators, and its Burst-Mode operation keeps the efficiency high for extended battery life. It operates from a 2V to 5.5V supply and features internal 700mA synchronous switches. Output voltage can be set as low as 620mV. The high 800kHz switching frequency enables the use of small, low-cost inductors. Ceramic input and output capacitors minimize the total PCB footprint. Additionally, the LT1612's low 1uA shutdown current virtually eliminates battery drain during shutdown, which extends the operating time in portable devices.

The LT1612 is available from stock in an eight-lead SOP and MSOP package. Pricing starts at $1.20 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
