IXYS Introduces High Power Density Schottky Diodes In Miniature Surface Mount (SMD) Packages

June 29, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

IXYS Corp. announced the expansion of its Schottky diode product families to include the small SMA and SMB SMD packages. With these miniature packages (with voltage ratings of 40, 60 and 100V), the devices are said to offer high power density, especially for portable products.

The product family with these packages are Schottky diodes with voltage ratings from 40 up to 100V. Rectifiers with Schottky barriers are well suited for power applications having high switching frequencies and low voltage rectification with low energy losses. Combined with the advantages of the small standardized packages (SMA and SMB), it is claimed that the customer is able to achieve a compact design with improved power performance at the lowest cost.

Typical applications are battery powered chargers and circuits, solar powered battery charging, solar cell panel bypass protection, power supplies, dc-dc converters and polarity protection or ‘ORing’-circuits for multiple supply voltages.

"As part of the ‘climate savers’ initiative and our corporate strategy, these products are part of our commitment to expand the solutions we offer the industry in order to save power," commented Dr. Nathan Zommer CEO of IXYS.

Schottky rectifiers are available with different designs supporting a variety of applications. Optimized characteristics include very low forward voltage drop, low reverse leakage current and what is described as an excellent dynamic behavior.
