IR Announces New Power MOSFET Technology

April 18, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier (IR, El Segundo, CA) announced it has developed a power MOSFET technology that is equivalent in performance to the CoolMOS technology from Infineon Technologies AG (formerly the semiconductor division and now a fully-owned subsidiary of Siemens AG). With the introduction of this technology, the company is segmenting its SMPS product offering into three distinct performance tiers: the Benchmark Series; High Performance Series; and the Standard Series. According to IR, the CoolMOS-type technologies, in their initial generation, will likely be focused primarily on the highest-performance applications. For applications that require levels of performance not presently achievable (up to a factor of 5 times better, according to IR), the company will offer devices with CoolMOS-type silicon in IR's Super series packages as part of the Benchmark Series of SMPS power MOSFETs. Details of package types and products will be outlined in May or June, with volume production availability in late summer.
