Intersil Launches ISL6251/ISL6255 Battery Chargers

May 01, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, CA) released its new ISL6251 and ISL6255 chemistry-independent battery chargers, which raise performance standards and yield cost savings for makers of notebook PCs and other portable devices. Both devices deliver increased battery capacity and life while improving charging safety compared to current and legacy solutions while often enabling the use of smaller and lower-cost ac adapters.

The ISL6251 and ISL6255 battery charger ICs maximize battery capacity/life and minimize charge times, and offer ±0.5% voltage regulation accuracy, ±3% full charging current accuracy, ±3% source current monitoring accuracy, input current limit response of 96% efficiency, 7 V to 25 V input-voltage range, 17.64 V battery voltage set point, programmable charger current limit from zero to full scale (including trickle charge currents), programmable adapter current limit and charge voltage, ac adapter present indicator, system power monitor output, and thermal shutdown.

Both the ISL6251 and the ISL6255 are available now. Price in 1,000-unit quantities for the ISL6251HRZ is $2.25 and, $2.75 for the ISL6255HRZ. Both devices are available in 28-pad, 5 mm x 5 mm, quad flat no-lead (QFN) packages for space and thermal efficiency; lead-free packaging is available.
