Intersil Announces ISL6568 PWM Control IC

December 20, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced its ISL6568, a two-phase, PWM control IC that provides a precision voltage regulation system for advanced microprocessors. By reducing the number of external parts, the ISL6568 provides high performance at low BOM cost. The integration of power MOSFET drivers into the controller IC marks a departure from the separate PWM controller and driver configuration of previous multi-phase product families.

A unique feature of the ISL6568 is the use of both DCR and rDS(ON) current sensing. Load line voltage positioning (droop) and over-current protection are accomplished through continuous inductor DCR current sensing, while rDS(ON) current sensing is used for accurate channel-current balance. By using both DCR and rDS(ON) current sensing, Intersil offers the best of both worlds - accurate current sensing with precise phase-to-phase current balance.

The ISL6568 is available now in standard lead finish and lead-free, 32-lead, 5 mm x 5 mm, QFN packages. The device supports either commercial or industrial temperature ranges. The suggested price in 10,000-unit quantities is $1.45 for each IC.
