Intersil Adds New Multiple Output Controllers For Fault Protection & Reduced BOM

December 05, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. announced a pair of multiple-output standard buck ICs that integrate critical power management functions to lower the number of components and save board space. The triple and dual output regulators are claimed to provide a single, high-efficiency power solution for a variety of point-of-load (POL) applications.

The ISL8501 and ISL8510 feature a 5V fixed input voltage capability and variable input voltage ranges up to 25V. These flexible voltage ranges make these devices suitable for a wide range of point-of-load applications such as 5V FPGA/CPLD and DSP power supplies, 12V telecom/datacom power supplies and 24V battery-powered handheld applications.

The ISL8501 is a triple output controller with two 500mA LDOs and a 1A standard PWM regulator with integrated high-side power MOSFET, while the ISL8510 is a dual output device with a single 500mA LDO and a 1A standard PWM regulator.

The ISL8501 and the ISL8510 integrate two PGOOD (Power OK) outputs for the PWM and the LDOs, along with dedicated ENABLE inputs, eliminating the need for a separate sequencer/supervisor. The enhanced fault protection features, such as undervoltage protection, thermal overload protection and overcurrent protection for both the PWM and LDO(s) make these devices suitable for a robust power supply solution.

The output voltage of the LDO(s) is fully adjustable from 0.6 to 4.2V and the PWM regulator’s output voltage is adjustable from 0.6 to 20V. The ISL8501 and ISL8510 are currently available with identical pin-to-pin configurations in 24-lead, thermally-enhanced 4x4 QFN packages.

The ISL8501 is available now in a 24-lead QFN package and is priced at $2.17 in 1,000-unit quantities. The ISL8510 is available now in a 24-lead QFN package and is priced at $2.04 in 1,000-unit quantities.
