Intersil Adds ISL8483/88/89 LINEARLINK ICs

August 06, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced the addition of three new members to the LINEARLINK™ RS-485/RS-422 family of data transceivers - the ISL8483, ISL8488 and ISL8489. The new transceivers operate from a wide supply tolerance and all pins have greater than 7kV ESD protection for increased reliability. Slew rate limiting for a 250kbps data rate minimizes electromagnetic interference and delivers high data integrity for extended long-run applications. Typical applications for the new ICs include factory automation; security networks; keyboard/video/mouse switching; industrial/process control networks; building environmental control systems; heating, ventilating and air conditioning control systems; level translators; and RS-232 extension cords.

The ISL8483, ISL8488 and ISL8489 are high-performance drop-in replacements that offer an upgrade in performance and signal integrity, and are guaranteed to operate over a ±10% supply range. The RS-485/RS-422 transceivers offer 160µA of quiescent current, a –7V to +12V common-mode input voltage range, and Class 3 ESD protection (>7kV HBM) on all pins. Both driver output current and thermal-limiting protection features are built into each IC. Package options matching competing products include eight-lead and 14-lead SOIC and PDIP to accommodate drop-in compatibility.

The ISL8483, ISL8488 and ISL8489 are available now, all with industrial temperature ratings. Pricing for 100-unit to 999-unit quantities is $1.21 each for the ISL8483IB (SOIC package) and ISL8483IP (PDIP package), $1.05 each for the ISL8488IB and ISL8489IB (SOIC package), and $1.05 each for the ISL8488IP and ISL8489IP (PDIP package).
