High-Temp High-Voltage DC-DC Converters for Down-hole Tools

January 15, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier Corp. (IR) has introduced the HTH27022S and HTM27092S isolated hybrid hermetic DC-DC converters for high temperature and high shock environments such as oil drilling applications and mud turbine generators. Featuring an operating case temperature of 165 degrees C with transient up to 175 degrees C and with a high nominal input voltage of 270V, the HTH27022S and HTM27092S are commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) converters that can significantly reduce design cycle time, size and design costs associated with high temperature applications.

“Hermetic, hybrid packaging is an attractive feature because it provides high reliability in demanding applications such as oil drilling applications as well as small size and light weight, thus enabling designers to speed up the design cycle while reducing system size, weight and cost,” said Odile Ronat, IR HiRel marketing director.

The 55W HTH27022S provides an output of 2.5A at 22Vdc and is delivered in a 3.5” x 2.15” x 0.4” package. The higher-powered 92W HTM27092S provides an output of 1A at 92Vdc and is delivered in a 4.0” x 2.15” x 0.4” package. The HTH27022S weighs 70g while the HTM27092S weighs 80g. Electrical and environmental qualification reports are available upon request.

The HTH27022S and HTM27092S products feature internal EMI filter, magnetically coupled current feedback, under-voltage lockout, output over-voltage limiter, external inhibit and short circuit and overload protection. Additional features include small size, low weight and high tolerance to environmental stresses such as wide temperature extremes and severe shock and vibration.
