High-Side Switch for SIL2 and SIL3 Compliant Systems
STMicroelectronics offers the IPS161H, a monolithic device which can drive capacitive, resistive or inductive loads with one side connected to ground; it is specifically designed to match safety integrity level (SIL) applications. Built-in thermal shutdown protects the chip against over-temperature and short-circuit conditions. The device has an RDS(on) of 0.06Ω and is rated for 0.7A loads.
The IPS161H is a single high-side switch with protections and diagnostics for Safety Integrity Level (SIL2 and SIL3) compliant systems. With a supply voltage range up to 60V, the IPS161H intelligent power switch (IPS) is capable of safely driving complex (resistive, capacitive and inductive) loads with one side connected to ground such as valves, relays and lamps in factory automation or process control applications.
In order to minimize the power dissipation when the output is shorted, a non-dissipative short-circuit protection (cut-off) is implemented. It limits both the output average current value and, consequently, the device overheating. The DIAG common diagnostic pin reports the thermal shutdown, open load in off-state and cut-off. Cut-off delay time can be programmed by an external capacitor.
