Fairchild Releases Gate Drivers To Improve Fuel Efficiency In Automotive Applications

March 18, 2009 by Jeff Shepard

Fairchild Semiconductor is claiming that it is bringing designers a series of gate drivers that improve power consumption, noise immunity and transient voltage performance in automotive applications. The company claims that the FAN708x series can increase fuel efficiency by enabling engineers to develop more accurate and precise fuel injection control systems under all operating conditions.

These gate drivers drive MOSFETs and IGBTs in high side and bridge driver applications such as direct fuel injection systems and motor controls. They are said to offer less than half the quiescent power consumption compared to alternate devices on the market (100µA versus 240µA quiescent current), allowing designers to optimize systems and extend the operating range. Fairchild claims that these products offer the industry’s highest transient voltage performance – said to be double that of alternate products. This is said to make the system design more immune to noise issues; allowing reliable, precise control of MOSFETs or IGBTs even under the harshest operating conditions.

The FAN708x products meet the industry’s highest reliability requirements and are qualified according to the AEC-Q100 standard. These gate drivers are designed to handle negative voltage swings, making them more resilient to driver stage latch up. The FAN708x series of products are highly integrated gate drivers, eliminating between ten and fifteen discrete components and providing automotive designers a 40% space savings.

Fairchild’s energy-efficient solutions for the automotive electronics market offer unique capabilities in advanced process and packaging technologies, as well as the ability to integrate power analog, power discrete and optoelectronic functionality into innovative packaging. Fairchild offers the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of products, from 1W to >1200W, to maximize energy efficiency in today’s automotive electronic applications such as power management, body control, motor control, ignition and engine management, and electric and hybrid electric vehicle systems.

The units are priced (1000, pcs.) as follows: FAN7080 (250mA/500mA, non-inverted) US $0.81; FAN7081 (250mA/500mA, inverted) $0.73; FAN7083 (200mA/400mA, non-inverted) $0.85; and FAN7085 (300mA/300mA, inverted) $0.93. The units have a delivery of 8 weeks ARO.
