Fairchild Offers FAN5098 DC/DC Voltage Regulator IC

November 05, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Fairchild Semiconductor International (San Jose, CA) announced the new FAN5098 dc/dc voltage regulator IC for the upcoming AMD Opteron™ and AMD Athlon™ processors with Hammer technology. The FAN5098 is intended for use in providing power regulation for the CPU VCORE in desktop, workstation and server applications. The FAN5098 uses a multi-phase architecture, including control-loop methods to improve load regulation and transient response.

The two-phase FAN5098 includes built-in, high-performance MOSFET drivers; five-bit VID codes that allow for output voltages from 0.800V to 1.550V; dynamic VID transitions with glitch-free, output voltages and controlled slew-rates; typical output currents of 42A; and current sensing with loss-less MOSFET RDS(on) methods and current matching that is closely controlled between the output phases.

Over-voltage/under-voltage protection, programmable current limiting, programmable soft-start, thermal protection and power-good output are built-in features for increased system safety and reliability. The FAN5098 is available in a 24-pin TSSOP package and is rated for operation from 0 to +70 degrees C.

Available now, pricing for the FAN5098 is $1.88 for 1,000-piece quantities. Delivery is eight weeks ARO.
