Fairchild Announces New 40V DC-DC Synchronous Rectifier

Fairchild Semiconductor announced its 40V breakdown dc-dc synchronous rectifier. This synchronous rectifier is said to be suitable for power supplies such as dc-dc brick modules and servers where the highest efficiency and the smallest footprint are critical features.

The FDMS8460 is said to offer world class R_DS(ON) and total gate charge (Q_G), and to provide 20% lower Figure of Merit (FOM) compared to other 40V MOSFET solutions. Packaged in an industry standard and green 5 x 6mm MLP package, this dc-dc synchronous rectifier is said to provide designers the necessary performance and packaging to optimize their designs.

Fairchild’s PowerTrench® MOSFET process technology is said to enable higher output power levels without increasing the solution footprint, to produce exceptionally low values for Miller charge (Q_GD), R_DS(ON) and Q_G, and improve the gate-source charge to gate-drain charge (Q_GS:Q_GD) ratio to above one. All of these enhancements are said to result in superior switching performance, avoiding shoot-through and improving thermal efficiencies. The FDMS8460’s ultra-low RDS(ON) of 2.2mΩ max and extremely low Q_GD of 10nC allows conduction losses and switching losses to be drastically reduced. This increases the drain current through the device to improve efficiency and to reduce heat (conduction loss). Its 40V MOSFET rating is described as essential for the 5V and the 12V output rail voltages typically required in today’s dc-dc applications.

The FDMS8460 is part of a comprehensive portfolio of discrete power semiconductors. These products are said to enable high efficiency in computers, automobiles, handsets, power supplies and home entertainment consumer products such as LCD TVs and Class D audio applications.

The FDMS8460 utilizes lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All of Fairchild’s products are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union’s Directive on the restriction of the use of certain substances (RoHS).
