EPCOS Presents New Chip Tantalum Capacitors

New Products Nov 19, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

EPCOS AG (Germany) announced its new chip tantalum capacitors that feature polymer multianodes. The components exhibit low ESR making them suitable for bulk capacitors for ICs with high-current requirements in the PC and telecom equipment markets. In SMPS, the capacitors can be used to smooth ripple currents up to 4.5A.

The multi-anode design of these 7.3mm x 4.3mm x 4.1mm tantalum capacitors consists of three low-profile polymer-coated tantalum anodes connected in parallel. This is claimed to reduce ESR to one-ninth of conventional tantalums, enabling ESR values of about 10 milliohms.

Samples of the capacitors rated at 680µF, 4V, are available, with those rated at 470µF, 6.3V, currently being developed.
