Enhanced-Temp High-Power TVS Diodes for Power Line Applications

February 25, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Bourns, Inc. announced new high-power TVS diodes for use in dc bus protection applications. The new models deliver high current bidirectional port protection that meets IEC 61000-4-5 8/20 µs current surge requirements and are RoHS compliant. Designated Bourns® Models PTVS6-058C-TH and PTVS6-076C-TH, this new series of power TVS diodes provide enhanced temperature performance for greater system stability and increased reliability. Designed using advanced silicon technology, Bourns' new devices offer lower clamping voltage under surge compared to Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) technology. In Bourns' testing, the new models have exhibited an excellent surge response versus temperature; the typical maximum surge current at 150 degrees C 75% of their rated value at 25 degrees C.

“We designed Bourns’ two new high power TVS diodes with enhanced temperature performance to meet robust circuit protection requirements that offer superior protection against power line surges and indirect lightning strikes in ac and dc power line applications,” said Ben Huang, Semiconductor Product Line Manager at Bourns, Inc. “Our new diode series also provides excellent surge performance and temperature ratio benefits that are critical requirements in today’s demanding high power applications.”

Both Bourns® models provide very high surge current protection with a peak pulse current rating of 6 kA. The Bourns® Model PTVS6-058C-TH features a 58 V standoff voltage and the Bourns® model PTVS6-076C-TH has a 76 V standoff voltage. As a pricing reference, the Bourns® models PTVS6-058C-TH and PTVS6-076C-TH are priced at $13.78 each in 10 piece quantities and $12.60 each in 500 piece quantities, respectively. Both models are available now.
