Enhanced Amphenol Junction Box for Solar Industry Meets Stringent Requirements

June 21, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

Amphenol Industrial introduced the versatile Hercules junction box. This junction box series was developed to meet the stringent technical requirements of the solar industry, yet offers significant design flexibility.

This UL/TUV approved junction box features a standardized exterior box geometry for automated assembly, making it ideal for use on rigid silicon panels used throughout PV applications. Hercules features rear alignment with tape and tabs to maintain a low breakage rate during robotic assembly and to ensure the long life and quality of the solar module.

With an increase in its Environmental Protection Rating to IP67, Hercules features a sealed design with improved heat dissipation for better temperature cycling. The new junction box offers either a spring clamp termination with leads that clamp to the inside of the junction box or the ability to terminate leads with solder. Hercules junction boxes also allow for the use of potting compound to seal the inside of the junction box from moisture.

Hercules junction box diodes can be matched to any photovoltaic (PV) panel’s specifications for optimal electrical protection. Amphenol offers a variety of diodes in multiple current ratings.

The updated junction box is 117 mm x 107 mm x 22 mm, has a temperature range from -40 to +85°C and offers various ranges for contacts and bypass diodes. It has a current rating of 20A and a rated voltage of 1,000Vdc (TUV) and 600Vdc (UL).

Hercules can be used in conjunction with Amphenol’s H4 self-locking connectors. The connectors meet NEC2008 standards; offer a higher current rating and lower power loss.

Delivery is 4 weeks ARO.
