Digitally Controlled Dc-Dc Converter from ROAL

July 21, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

ROAL Electronics (Los Angeles) has developed the PS194 power supply, a high power density and high efficiency dc-dc boost converter. This multiphase and digitally controlled unit provides 2000W with greater than 96% efficiency. The PS194 measures 186x100x69mm providing a power density of 1.5W per cubic centimeter (25W per cubic inch).

An unusual characteristic of this product is the innovative digital multiphase control (ROAL patent pending) driven by a single low-cost 8-bit microcontroller that combined with an analog PWM synchronized with a proper phase-shift, allows reduced input/output high frequency current ripples and lower size magnetic parts. The inclusion of all the logic, control and alarm functions inside the microcontroller firmware also contributes to reduced component count and higher density.

With a regulated output voltage (-65Vdc ±3%, ripple <200mV) and constant hold-up time over a wide input voltage range (-38.4Vdc to -72Vdc) and the full load range (1 to 31 Amps), the PS194 is a especially designed for telecom applications. The PS194 complies with all the specific related standards, norms and environmental conditions.
