DC-DC Converters for Wearables and EH-Powered Devices

Torex Semiconductor Ltd. has launched the XC9272 series of synchronous step-down dc-dc converters. These converters support a low output voltage under 1.0V and achieve an ultra-low supply current. The newly-launched dc-dc converters support a low output voltage from 0.60 to 0.95V, and achieves an ultra-low supply current of 0.5µA. This enables power to be supplied with high-efficiency to chipsets that require a core voltage under 1.0V and maximizes the performance of low-voltage chipsets.

Optimization of the analog circuitry to realize a supply current of 0.5μA and the use of PFM control for the operation method enable this product to achieve a significant increase of efficiency at light loads compared to conventional products. This makes it possible to dramatically improve power dissipation when the chipset is in the sleep state.

These characteristics make this power IC well-suited for applications that require a long battery drive time, such as devices with a GPS function, wearable devices, energy harvesting (EH) devices, and other devices in which efficiency in the sleep state is important.

The demand for low power consumption is growing stronger, and the development of chipsets with reduced core voltages is advancing. As core voltages of GPS, Bluetooth and other functions decrease, the market is expected to experience a further increase of demand for chipsets that require a core voltage of less than 1.0V. This is likely to create an increase in demand for ultra-low supply current dc-dc converters that can support reduced core voltages.

The supported output voltage is0.60V to 0.95V, the input voltage range is 2.0V to 6.0V, and the supply current is held to 0.1μA or less in standby mode. Short-circuit protection and UVLO are provided as internal protective functions. CL discharge can be selected. Select the SOT-25 package or the small USP-6EL (1.8 x 2.0 x h0.4mm) package is optional to match the application.

Features of the XC9272 series include: Low output voltage support from 0.60V to 0.95V (accuracy ±20mV); Ultra-low supply current of 0.5μA; PFM control achieves high efficiency at light loads; Fast load transient response of 50mV (Vin=3.6V, Vout=0.7V, for Iout from 10μA to 50mA); SOT-25 package or smallUSP-6EL package (1.8 x 2.0 x h0.4mm); Protective functions include Short circuit protection, UVLO and CL discharge can be selected.
