Champs Technologies Incorporates Planar Magnetics Embedded in Multi-Layer PCBs for Digital DC-DC Converters

October 10, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Champs Technologies designs and manufactures planar (and wound components) for the dc-dc module market. Many of the planar magnetics currently supplied by Champs as standard devices have windings that comprise from 10-12 layer pcb up to 24 layers of 4oz pcb. Champs has extended that capability to now include the entire dc-dc module as one embedment 7NDASH; similar to that supplied by the dc-dc "brick" manufacturers. As one instance, Champs supports the reference design recently released by Microchip.

The magnetics embedded in the multi-layer pcb for that design included planar transformer, inductor, gate drive, and bias supply. Information pertaining to the components used in that design and similar devices and supporting data sheets can be found at.

Supplying 6-8 layer pcb in 1/4th and 1/8th DOSA footprints has always been a service Champs has offered to Asian OEMs. Supplying power components in planar form has also been a strength. Performing SM assembly was a natural follow on to this business. Now Champs is capable of offering and supporting the manufacture and design of all magnetics embedded in the multi-layer pcb, including SM assembly of all components, for digital dc-dc converters in 1/4th and 1/8th brick size. In that regard, Champs is now marketing and promoting its full expertise as an EMS company. Champs is prepared to offer customers magnetic component solutions on an individual basis, that is "stand-alone" or discrete components or incorporated as part of the embedded pcb design. Volume capacity per customer is typically10K-100K per month. There is no minimum order requirement.
