C&D Half Brick Delivers Power-over-Ethernet

December 11, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

C&D Technologies has launched a dc-dc converter that simplifies the design and implementation of Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) applications. The HHS04-520 module is able to generate the optimum isolated hub voltage to power at least 13 PoE enabled devices. The number can be increased for devices taking less than the maximum allowed power of 12.95W or if cable runs are short.

The half-brick HHS04-520 complies with the IEEE802.3af standard that stipulates requirements including start-up characteristics and low-noise for equipment to be used in PoE and IP telephony applications. The module delivers high efficiency of 92% at 52.5V, 200W output. These converters offer an input voltage range of 36V to 75V and an industry standard pin-out that simplifies the integration of the HHS04-520 into existing designs. The module also features 2250VDC isolation. An open frame design along with a heatsink-attach option allows for flexible thermal management of the HHS04-520 in the customer’s end system.

"C&D strives to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of communications

OEMs." Said Kulbir Dhillon, C&D’s director of product strategy. "The HHS04 isolated half-brick provides OEMs with flexibility, faster time-to-market, lower risk and a lower total cost of ownership for their end-system solution."

Key features of the new dc-dc converters include; remote sense, remote on/off, over-temperature protection and trim capability. The HHS04-520 measures 2.40" (L) x 2.28"(W) x 0.43"(H) and has an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +100 °C.

Unit pricing for the C&D Technologies HHS04-520 is $62.60 each in quantities of

1,000.
