Buck Regulators have Adaptable Light Load and Surge Capability

September 03, 2015 by Jeff Shepard

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited (AOS) announced the release of the AOZ3053, a 5A EZBuck dc-dc regulator with smart mode adaption functions, available in a thermally enhanced exposed pad SO-8 package. The AOZ3053 is the first of this new smart platform, which allows for more thermally efficient dc-dc solutions for consumer, networking and industrial applications such as LCD TVs, set-top boxes, cable modems, and power supplies.

The AOZ3053 is a high efficiency and simple-to-use synchronous step-down regulator with switching frequency of 500kHz and input voltage range of 4.5V to 18V. Leveraging AOS's co-package EZBuck design, the AOZ3053 integrates a 55mW high-side and 15mW low-side MOSFET, and provides 5A of continuous output current at over 90% efficiency and maintains it at 85% efficiency while in 10mA light load operation. This new device offers various features such as adaptable light load with surge output current capability, over-voltage protection, cycle-by-cycle current limit and short-circuit protection which are a must when powering high-end digital ICs.

"Today's consumer electronics products are built with features that require more processing power. Design engineers are looking for dc-dc converters that offer higher output current in the same solution size while minimizing power consumption with high-efficient, high-performance power conversion. The AOZ3053 meets these design challenges by providing higher output current and higher efficiency," said Kenny Hu, Power IC Marketing at AOS.

The AOZ3053 is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12 weeks. The unit price of 1,000 pieces is $1.30.
