AVX Develops New Series Of Insulated Displacement Connectors That Can Handle 15A & 650V

July 20, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corp. has developed a series of 9177 insulated displacement connectors (IDCs) that can handle up to 15A and are rated for use at up to 650V, making them suitable for applications such as high voltage inverters in the lighting industry and other high-performance industrial equipment. Available as a single contact version for separate power handling or two-way and three-way configurations, 9177 series connectors are said to offer the user flexibility of placement on the PCB for single or multiple wires. The devices are end-stackable for larger pin counts, providing even greater flexibility.

Before assembly, the part is surface mounted to the PCB. Using the mass termination tools, stranded (14 to 20 AWG) wires can be inserted into the contact slot. This process displaces the insulation and enables the individual conductors of the wire to form a homogeneous joint. The shape of the molding forms a restraint to the wires insulation when fully inserted in the contact, strengthening the joint. This process eliminates the need for hand soldering and cable preparation. Contact material is phosphor bronze, with 5 re-terminations achievable for each individual contact under certain conditions.

"The 9177 series offers customers the ability to mass terminate individual wires to a single row of contacts using IDC technology, simplifying the mass assembly process," said Malcolm Ankers, Marketing Development Engineer at AVX."

Pricing typically starts at $0.30 per line in 100 piece quantities with a standard lead time of eight weeks.
