Artesyn Technologies Introduces New EXB50 Series DC/DC Converters

July 09, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL) has introduced the EXB50 Series of 50W high-efficiency, wide-output trim range, single-output, open-frame, isolated dc/dc converters. As next-generation communications and networking systems move to low-voltage silicon, system designers need power solutions that can compensate for anticipated changes in IC voltage. The EXB50 is suited for communications products and systems employing distributed-power architecture.

The new series is built in the industry-standard half-brick footprint and is initially available in output ranges of 5.0V, 3.3V and 2.0V, with a 48V (36V to 75V) input range. Users can draw up to 10A from each model in the series. Additionally, the EXB50 offers wide trim capability, over-voltage and over-temperature protection, and remote on/off. Using a synchronous-rectification topology and planar magnetics, the EXB50 delivers up to 91 percent efficiency. Its open-frame construction has a wide ambient temperature range of -40 degrees to 70 degrees C with natural convection and no derating.

The EXB50 carries full international safety approvals and provides basic insulation, reducing compliance cost and time to market. The standard power modules sell for $63.75 each in quantities of 1,000 and can be ordered with 12-week lead times.
