APS Debuts SixPac Series SCR Controllers/Converters

July 14, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Applied Power Systems Inc. (APS, Hicksville, NY) announced its new SixPac™ Series of high-power SCR ac controllers and dc converters, which feature flexibility and are designed for long life in heavy-duty industrial applications. The SixPac includes three dual-isolated SCR modules that can be configured as either a three-phase ac controller or a regulated dc converter. Applications include solid-state motor starters, soft-starts/soft-stops, variable-speed drives, regulated power supplies, and any other application that needs a compact and rugged source of power.

The isolated SCR modules are mounted on a high-efficiency heatsink and are equipped with input fuses, snubbers, Hall-effect current sensor, output bus, cooling fan, and a capacitor filter bank (for regulated dc output). The design measures 18 in x 10 in x 11 in. The SixPac is available for input voltages from 10 Vac to 700 Vac (40 Hz to 80 Hz) and output currents from 50 A dc to over 1,000 A dc, or from 100 A ac rms to 600 A ac rms per phase (as much as 750 kW). All units come with a AP-1950 SCR gate drive board and an R-C snubber board. The SixPac is designed and built to withstand the severe mechanical and environmental conditions of industrial applications. It is mounted on a base of 12-gauge, cold-rolled steel. The AP1950 SCR gate drive board is conformal coated for moisture protection.
