APC Unveils Flexistax D950 Series DC-DC Converters

April 04, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Advanced Power Conversion plc (APC, Farnborough, England) announced its new 950 W Flexistax D950 dc-dc power conversion module developed specifically for use in telecom, automotive, industrial market and vehicle-mounted applications where standard off-the-shelf solutions do not exisit. The Flexistax D950 complements the Powerstax custom power range.

The Flexistax D950 has a wide and variable 11 Vdc to 36 Vdc input, and constant output between 12 V and 48 V. Utilizing a simple, custom-developed boost converter integrated into the design provides the boost in input voltage when conditions require. The rapid design and delivery time is achieved using a modular approach, centered on the Powerstax F501 full-brick dc-dc converters. Two of APC’s 500 W Powerstax F501 converters are coupled with a custom two-phase boost converter and customer-specified connectors to present a complete bespoke solution.

The patented high-efficiency topology and flexible design of the F501 dc-dc converter modules means that standard items can be easily and quickly optimized for efficiency. This ensures system efficiency of 85% and a much lower level of heat dissipation, which allows the complete open-construction unit (measuring 6.0 in x 4.0 in x 1 in, including connections) for use in cold wall mounting with no forced-air cooling required.

Prototypes of the Flexistax D950 are available in just four weeks from APC’s Farnborough, England development and production facility. Dependent upon specification, prices start from $750 each for volume quantities of 500-plus pieces.
