APC Announces New Symmetra MW UPS

New Products Mar 21, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

American Power Conversion (APC, West Kingston, RI) announced plans to launch its static uninterruptible power system (UPS), the new Symmetra MW, which will offer up to 1.6MW of power in a scaleable, modular design. In addition, the unit can be paralleled for even higher power demands.

The Symmetra MW allows data center and facility managers to match uninterruptible power capacity to current needs instead of the current practice of over-designing systems for potential needs that may never materialize. The modular system allows expansion of power capacity in 200kW increments, eliminating the up-front costs of purchasing power and equipment not required at the time of installation. Furthermore, when power requirements increase, the system can be expanded by adding modules.

An additional feature of the Symmetra MW is a unique patent-pending battery-management technology, which continuously monitors individual battery cells and battery characteristics, identifying under-performing batteries and, if required, injecting current into each individual battery. This battery management extends the life of batteries and ensures the best possible performance.

The new Symmetra MW is scheduled to be available in North America in the second half of 2002.
