Alpha and Omega Introduces its New 4-Channel TVS Arrays

October 14, 2020 by Gary Elinoff

The new devices, aimed at USB 3.x, HDMI 2.x and PCI Express Circuit Protection, feature both Ultra-Low Capacitances and Clamping Voltages.

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) unveiled its new series of Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) arrays consisting of the AOZ8S212UD4, AOZ8S321UD4, and AOZ8S306BD4. The new are units are aimed at protecting devices such as laptops and televisions from Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).

The new series of TVS diode arrays avert causing transmission errors by virtue of their inherently low capacitances. Additionally, the new units are contained within 2.5 x 1.0mm and 2 x 1mm DFN leadless Surface-Mounted Device (SMD) packages, and its flow-through feature is well matched to the way differential pairs are routed on PCBs.

As per Michael K. S. Ng, Sr., Marketing Manager of the TVS product line at AOS, “As the leading vendor in ESD protection solutions in high-speed interfaces, our newly released TVS platform provides a much better Figure of Merit (FOM) on the clamping voltage times capacitance. AOS is confident the new TVS products will contribute to reducing the ESD failure rate in our partners’ and customers’ electronic products.”

Similarities Between All the Members of the new Series of TVS Diodes

There are two versions each of the AOZ8S212UD4, AOZ8S321UD4 and one version of the AOZ8S306BD4, with all five providing four channels of unidirectional protection. A typical application for any of the series members is depicted below.

These TVS arrays consist of low capacitance, surge rated steering diodes packaged together with a TVS. When a transient occurs, the steering diodes direct the transient to either the ground or to the positive side of the power.

The AOZ8S212UD4

The two versions of the AOZ8S212UD4 are the AOZ8S212UD4-03 and the AOZ8S212UD4-05, featuring reverse working voltages of 3.3 and 5 volts, respectively.

Both versions feature a capacitance of 0.2 pF I/O to ground and line to line.

IEC 61000-4-5 (Lightning, 8/20 μs) is 3 amps.

ESD ratings are:

  • Contact per IEC 61000-4-2 ±8 kV
  • Air per IEC 61000-4-2 ±10 kV
  • Human body Model, per MIL-STD-883, Method 3015 ±8 kV

The  AOZ8S321UD4

There are also two versions of the  AOZ8S321UD4, they are the AOZ8S321UD4-03  and the  AOZ8S321UD4-05. They also feature reverse working voltages of 3.3 and 5 volts, respectively.

The AOZ8S321UD4-03 is rated for a typical line-to-line capacitance of 0.15 pF and .28 pF line to ground.

IEC 61000-4-5 (Lightning, 8/20 μs) is specified at 5 amps

ESD ratings are:

  • Contact per IEC 61000-4-2 ±15 kV
  • Air per IEC 61000-4-2 ±15 kV
  • Human body Model, per MIL-STD-883, Method 3015 ±8 kV

The AOZ8S306BD4

The AOZ8S306BD4-05 is available only with a reverse working voltage of 5 volts.

This unit sports a typical line-to-line capacitance of 0.15 pF and .25 pF line to ground.

IEC 61000-4-5 (Lightning, 8/20 μs) is 4 amps.

ESD ratings are:

  • Contact per IEC 61000-4-2 ±11 kV
  • Air per IEC 61000-4-2 ±11 kV
  • Human body Model, per MIL-STD-883, Method 3015 ±8 kV

Applications

  • HDMI 2.0/2.1
  • USB 3.2
  • V-by-One
  • Thunderbolt
  • Video graphics cards
  • Set-top box
  • Notebook computers
  • Monitors and flat panel displays

Physical Parameters

The new TVS suppressor arrays are RoHS compliant and Halogen Free.
