9W Isolated DC-DC Converters Provide Bipolar Dual Outputs

July 01, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

GE's Critical Power business has launched its new SHHN000A3CL isolated dc-dc converters, providing board designers with a bipolar dual-output module in a compact (1-inch-by-1-inch brick) footprint. The latest addition to GE's extensive Hammerhead series of power modules, the SHHN000A3CL unit features a wide input voltage range of 9-36 volts dc and a bipolar dual output, precisely regulated output voltage at 15 volts dc and -15 volts dc, 9W output power and a 0.3A output current.

The SHHN000A3CL can be used as a traditional dc-dc module, powering applications such as insulated-gate bipolar transistors and other semiconductor device drive circuits, or in hybrid power architectures and industrial markets. These converters have an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C.

The wide input range supported by GE’s SHHN000A3CL converter provides designers with increased flexibility when designing based on required input power capabilities. It also allows for sourcing consistency, equipping users with a single product that can fit into multiple sockets. The available configurations of the module—in through-hole and surface-mount formats—further add to the flexibility of the new converters.

Standard features of the SHHN000A3CL converters include remote on/off, remote sense and output voltage adjustment. In addition, the module is fully self-protected with output over-current and over-voltage, over-temperature and input under-voltage shutdown control. Available optional features include negative or positive on/off logic and surface-mount connections.

The outputs of the SHHN000A3CL are fully isolated from the input, allowing versatile polarity configurations and grounding connections. The unit’s built-in filtering for both input and output minimizes the need for external filtering components and reduces the overall solution footprint. The SHHN000A3CL dc-dc converter is now available in original equipment manufacturer quantities, with pricing beginning at $8.20.
