New Products Apr 09, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Inverter station, PVS800-IS offering a compact two-megawatt (MW) inverter solution is now available for rapid delivery from ABB Group. The new ABB inverter station is a compact and robust solution that houses all the equipment that is needed to rapidly connect two central inverters to a medium-voltage (MV) transformer. Each station can house two 875kW or 1000kW ABB central inverters, PVS800, an embedded auxiliary power system and monitoring system. The PVS800 central inverters used in the station have high total efficiency, with one of the most compact and easy-to-maintain designs on the market. With flexible and integrated dc and ac connection cabinets, the inverter station can be rapidly and easily connected to the solar array and MV transformer.

“The inverter station combines ABB’s long experience of using power converters in demanding environments and applications and is now packed into a highly reliable and easy-to-use package. At the same time, the station is cost-effective to transport and fast to install, offering our customers a very straightforward solution for large-scale PV power generation,” says Jyrki Leppänen, Director, market management, solar inverters.

The housing is based on a standard steel-framed, insulated, 20-foot shipping container. The total package weighs only ten tons, allowing easy and safe transportation and handling. The station’s thermal insulation and two-stage air filtering system enables operation in harsh temperature and humidity environments and is designed for at least 25 years of operation.

The ABB inverter station, rated from 1.75 to 2 megawatts (MW), is designed for multi-megawatt PV power plants. Depending on the size of the PV power plant, several ABB inverter stations can be combined to meet the needed capacity. With a wide list of approvals and with advanced, flexible grid support functions, the inverter station meets all the applicable network connection requirements, regardless of where the project is located.
