Capacitors for Renewables Rated from 12.5kVar to 28.1kVar

February 16, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Most tubular power capacitors have an IP20 terminal block with a screw connection, and the control cabinet wiring with such capacitors is known to take a considerable amount of assembly time. For this reason, Vishay has introduced a new generation of power capacitors with fast connection technology. The completely screwless connection technology is significantly faster and simpler from the use of spring force and lever actuation.

Applications for the capacitors include wind power plants, solar panels, inverters, thermal power stations, power factor correction, and harmonic filters.

Checking the lever position allows a simple check for the completeness of all connections. The company says that the necessary connection force results automatically, free from torque specifications. Also, according to the company, fast connection technology provides maximum contact reliability over the whole service life of the capacitors, and the capacitors can continue to operate maintenance-free without the need to tighten screws.

The Vac for the capacitors ranges from 230V to 1000V with nominal voltages of between 400V and 660V, and the capacitors' output is from 12.5kVar to 28.1kVar. The nominal operating current for the capacitors is from 18A to 36.9A.

Vishay says that such connection technology is particularly useful for quick installation in environments with permanent vibrations, such as those experienced in wind power plants.
