United Solar Ovonic Achieves Record Sales, Opens Facility

July 18, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (ECD, Rochester Hills, MI) announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, United Solar Ovonic LLC, has achieved record product sales of approximately $18 million, representing 5.6 MW of solar cells for the quarter ended June 30, 2005. Production levels reached 2.0 MW per month for the months of May and June. Additionally, United Solar Ovonic's backlog continues to be strong; the backlog, representing more than six months of shipments, is about $45 million, or 13.7 MW of solar cells.

In order to meet the strong demand for its products, United Solar Ovonic broke ground on a second facility that will double its thin-film triple-junction solar module manufacturing capacity by September 2006. The new 160,000 ft² facility will be located in Auburn Hills, MI, and is scheduled to be ready for occupancy in May 2006. A section of the facility will be available in October 2005 to begin installation of the new thin-film solar module manufacturing machine.
