Toyota to Sell Fuel Cell Hybrids by End of 2002

June 30, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Toyota Motor Corp.'s (Tokyo, Japan) USA Sales division announced that it will lease about 20 fuel cell hybrid sport utility vehicles at the end of the year in the US and Japan. The vehicles will be offered to selected companies and research facilities that have access to a hydrogen supply and service facilities.

Toyota reported that the timing is earlier than expected due to the successful testing of the FCHV-4 prototype. Only 20 vehicles will be available because of remaining challenges, which include lowering costs, cold temperature performance and other unnamed issues. The vehicle will be based on the Highlander in the US and the Kluger-V in Japan. The cost of the vehicles was not immediately available.
