Silanna Broadens Power Portfolio with Appulse Acquisition

March 21, 2018 by Paul Shepard

The Silanna Group today announced that it had completed its acquisition of Appulse Power. Appulse Power will be integrated into The Silanna Group's worldwide semiconductor organization and will broaden Silanna's power management portfolio to include highly-efficient ac-dc converters and controllers.

Appulse Power is the second company that The Silanna Group has acquired while the companies were being incubated in EvoNexus. In 2012, The Silanna Group acquired IO Semiconductor while it was part of the EvoNexus incubator.

EvoNexus is the leading technology startup incubator in Southern California. EvoNexus startups receive mentorship, access to capital and space in a collaborative working environment. EvoNexus is supported by corporate investors, including some of the largest multinational corporations in the world. Its startups enjoy Class A office and dry lab space provided by California's leading real estate developer, The Irvine Company.

"Appulse Power becomes the 21st startup to be acquired out of EvoNexus, Southern California's premier technology incubator. The Appulse Power team, under CEO Dr. Mete Erturk, has developed technology that will significantly reduce the size and increase the capabilities of the mobile charging devices we all carry. With Appulse Power being the second company that the Silanna Group acquired out of EvoNexus, we are now hitting doubles instead of singles!" said Rory Moore, Co-Founder, and CEO of EvoNexus.

The Silanna Group, a privately held company, whose charter is to develop and productize advanced technologies, is headquartered in Brisbane Australia. It has operations and design centers in Sydney Australia; San Diego, California; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Singapore.

"As an innovation driver, Silanna has introduced breakthrough technologies in the RF, and now the Power Electronics markets. The Appulse Power acquisition accelerates our strategy to extend our position as a technology leader in the Power Electronics market," stated Mark Drucker, CEO of Silanna Semiconductor North America.

"The combination of Silanna's Power Technology and Appulse Power's Advanced Digital Control capability position Silanna to deliver differentiated solutions to the market that significantly improve the efficiency of our customers' products," Drucker concluded.

Appulse Power, also privately held, is based in Ontario, Canada, with operations in Toronto and San Diego. Appulse Power is a fast-growing technology company with multiple innovations in power management. It is focused on ASIC design with innovations focused on ac-dc power conversion. The company's technology and semiconductor ASIC products lead to higher efficiency, lower cost and smaller size than today's state-of-the-art offerings.

Appulse Power was recognized by the University of Toronto when it was selected to be part of the 2014 UTEST cohort that is sponsored by MaRS Innovation. In 2015 Appulse Power was recognized by the Ontario Centers of Excellence with a SmartStart Seed Fund Grant.

"As a result of combining Silanna's global presence and strong engineering team with Appulse Power's innovations in ac-dc power conversion, we will soon be launching products with the highest power conversion efficiency and usable power density. We are thrilled to be joining the Silanna Group to serve our customers with industry-leading solutions," commented Mete Erturk, CEO of Appulse Power.
