December 26, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Sharp Solar Energy Systems a subsidiary of Sharp Corp. (Japan), will construct its first production facility in the US to manufacture solar products. The new facility will be built at Sharp's plant in Memphis, TN, with production to commence by next spring. It will assemble solar modules for residential, commercial and industrial installations.

This year Sharp increased its production capacity from 94MW to 148MW a year. By next March, Sharp will have 200MW of manufacturing capacity and forecasts a 50 percent sales increase. Forty-five jobs will be created at the solar plant, increasing to 90 by the end of next year with a possibility for additional jobs over the next several years in response to anticipated market expansion.
