Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems Europe announced its technology line-up for Electronica 2016, taking place November 8th - 11th in Munich, Germany. At Stand 105 in Hall B6 the company will be highlighting industry-leading innovations — including GaN semiconductors, thermal management products, batteries for industrial use, passive components, sensors, electromechanical, as well as automotive solutions — that provide increased efficiency and reliability for a wide range of applications.

As GaN power switches are transitioning from advanced technology to a reliable, energy saving power switching solution, Panasonic will be exhibiting devices and applications that harness the power of their gallium nitride power technology. The newly released X-GaNâ„¢ gate driver, optimized for high frequency switching, unlocks the full performance of the company's line-up of 600V enhancement mode X-GaN transistors, while keeping design efforts to a minimum. Panasonic will demonstrate the system size reduction potential of high speed and high efficiency switching with application examples, like an ultra-compact ac adapter and a motor drive unit for mechatronic integration. The GaN evaluation environment, and the lineup of GaN power transistors, will also be featured on the stand.

Panasonic will introduce its new CG-320A Li-ion Pin Type Battery, the industry’s smallest diameter cylindrical rechargeable battery on the market. It has been developed using extremely fine components and materials compared to standard Lithium-ion batteries. Its outstanding technical design makes this battery suitable for wearable devices with heavy power demands. Also on display will be the newly developed rechargeable Flexible Li-ion Battery. With a thickness of only 0.55mm the battery contributes to a longer life of devices as it retains charging and discharging characteristics even with repeated bending and twisting. This battery can meet various market needs for applications entailing repeated bending and twisting such as card devices and smart clothing.

On display will be Panasonic’s cost-effective and easy to install Soft PGS solution for IGBT modules. It is an ideal TIM (Thermal Interface Material) solution and solves the issues of Thermal Grease and PCM. The high compressibility of Soft PGS helps reduce contact thermal resistance due to better fitting to uneven surfaces (compared with Panasonic’s regular PGS thermal management solution). The high reliability and thermostability of Soft PGS can significantly increase the lifetime of IGBT modules.

Using large space-consuming axial, THT and SMD capacitors to achieve low ESR requirements and good EMC behavior is passé. Panasonic Hybrid Capacitors, combining the advantages of electrolytic capacitors with those of solid Polymer capacitors, have established themselves as reliant and across-the-board solutions in automotive and industrial applications alike. Hybrid technology offers low leakage current and long life in combination with low ESR in smaller case sizes. The voltage range of 25V to 80V caters to the capacitor industry standard temperature rating of -55 to 105 degrees C (ZA series) and -55 to 125 degrees C (ZC and ZK series). Ripple Current Rating (RCR), which is the decisive factor for a lot of capacitance agnostic applications find dramatic improvement for guaranteed lifetimes of 10000h lifetime at 105 degrees C and 4000h at 125 degrees C. Endurance of 3000h at 125 degrees C allows the possibility to augment the RCR up to 1.5 times.

In order to cover the market demand and application's requirements, Panasonic have developed a new Power choke coil technology (high power SMD in 12x12 case size ETQP8MxxxJFA.). Based on metal powder, the panasonic High Power SMD is suitable for high ripple current application (e.g. Engine System, Start& Stop system, Steering system, etc). Panasonic High Power SMD is not only suitable as replacement for rod core coil, but also suitable for downsizing. Instead of using 13x13, 15x15 or 17x17 case size, Panasonic can offer its High power SMD in 12x12 case size with same or even better electrical characteristics. Therefore this will lead also to reduce the size of the component and reduce the space on the PCB. With its low DCR characteristics, low power dissipation can be achieved with Panasonic High Power SMD.

The much improved and accurate second generation of Panasonic’s Grid-EYE infrared array sensors includes high gain types (AMG8833 and AMG8834) and low gain types (AMG8853 and AMG8854) and benefits from an improved NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) of 0.16 degree C at 10Hz and of 0.05 degree C at 1 Hz. For all Grid-EYE 2nd Generation models the detection distance has improved from 5m up to 7m. It is important to note that the second generation of Grid-EYE sensors is fully compatible with the existing first generation designs. This means that the engineers can now get improved and accurate results when they use the sensor in their applications. Panasonic is committed to improve the customer experience and provide much more application benefits with the improved MEMS technology.

Also featuring on Panasonic’s stand will be super space-saving and highly reliable light touch switches for automotive and non-automotive applications, as well as capacitive touch panels benefiting from significant design flexibility for curved surfaces, e.g. navigation application in automotive.
