Nikon Reports Explosion of Fake Li-Ion Batteries

September 26, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

A camera service center for Nikon Corp. (Japan) has reported several camera explosions from Nikon D70 digital camera users, fortunately occurring within the users' camera bags. The main cause of the camera explosions was the imitation lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries that were used, which do not come equipped with a safety device and circuit protection.

In response to the problem, Nikon has started to attach genuine product holograms with its products to allow customers to distinguish between fake and real batteries.
