Marconi Confirms Participation in Acquisition Talks

August 07, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Marconi plc (UK) has confirmed that it is in talks with a potential buyer, after it responded to rumors that it is in discussions to be acquired by Chinese telecom firm Huawei Technologies. Marconi confirmed that it is in early-stage negotiations with unnamed parties, and that it is considering a range of options, including "potential business combinations" with third parties.

Marconi and Huawei currently have an agreement, signed in May, that Marconi would market the Chinese company's network technology in Europe, while Huawei would do the same for Marconi's wireless equipment in Asia. In June, Huawei reported that it was looking to increase its telecom market share outside China as it gains the trust of operators.
