LG Electronics & LG Chem To Investigate Report Of Laptop Fire

January 13, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

LG Electronics Inc. revealed that it will investigate reports in Korean media that one of its laptops exploded in flames. The media reports claimed that a South Korean journalist’s laptop began to emit smoke, and then burst into flames. There were reportedly no injuries from the incident.

LG stated that it was in possession of the laptop in question, and that it would "work with a third-party organization to provide an outside, independent assessment."

An LG spokesperson stated, "LG Electronics is collaborating with LG Chem, the battery maker, to investigate and determine the cause of the problem, as under normal usage conditions, this type of problem should not occur. We rigorously test our products not only for functionality and design but safety as well."

LG Chem is the world’s fifth-largest manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, which are used in mobile phones and laptop computers.

At the time of the reports, LG Electronics was declining to release details as to which model of laptop was involved.
