Intelligent Energy Unveils ENV Hydrogen Fuel Cell Motorbike

April 04, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Intelligent Energy Holdings plc (UK) unveiled its purpose-built and fully functioning Emissions Neutral Vehicle, or ENV, designed by Seymourpowell, which is a hydrogen fuel cell motorbike that emits only water vapor, is almost silent and is completely non-polluting. Intelligent Energy designed the ENV with a detachable fuel cell capable of powering anything from an ATV, personal watercraft or small home.

On a full tank, Intelligent Energy claims that the ENV bike could be used continually for up to four hours without any need for refueling. The bike’s primary frame and swinging arm are made from hollow-cast, aircraft-grade aluminium. At the bike’s heart is a fully integrated 1 kW fuel cell generator providing power on demand directly to the drivetrain. To enhance performance during peak power demand (i.e., when accelerating), the fuel cell is hybridized with a battery pack to provide a 6 kW peak load to the motor.

Intelligent Energy, which is relocating to Los Angeles, CA, expects the motorbike to be available as early as 2006.
