IdaTech Unveils Portable Fuel Cell System

November 22, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

IdaTech Corp. (Bend, OR), a fuel cell system/component and fuel cell solutions provider, has unveiled a scalable 100 W to 500 W portable fuel cell system prototype. The system is a prototype of a system that will be delivered to the US Army for use as a field battery charger in order to help solve the traditional logistical problem of getting power to troops in the field.

The entire fuel cell system, including reformer and hydrogen purification module, is about the size of a large lunch box, measuring about 12 in x 8 in x 6 in. The fuel is a pre-packaged methanol-water mixture, which provides a compact and long-lasting source of power. The power output of the prototype being shown is about 150 W, while the unit delivered to the Army will be 250 W in approximately the same size package.
