October 19, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Hyun Won of Korea has entered into an agreement with Viaspace subsidiary Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corp. (DMFCC). The cartridge design and certified manufacturer agreement is part of DMFCC's strategy to establish a global network of partners to manufacture and distribute fuel cartridges. Earlier this month DMFCC lengthened its cartridge design and certified manufacturer agreement with fellow Korean firm Elentec until 2011.

Hyun Won chief executive O-Shik Song commented: "The portable electronics industry is moving toward fuel cells, and I believe that fuel cartridges can be one of the growth engines for our company. Hyun Won can be a strategic partner with Viaspace to develop and introduce other high-technology products into the Korean marketplace."

The Korean firm, which also has offices in the US and Canada, primarily produces portable multimedia players including the mobiBLU, as well as image processing systems, glass encapsulation for optical light emitting diodes and controllers for automated machinery. DMFCC develops methanol fuel cartridges for eventual use in portable electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptops.
