Hydrogenics HyPM Selected for Demo in Japan

May 23, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Hydrogenics Corp. (Toronto, Canada), a designer and manufacturer of fuel cell technology, announced that it has been contracted by ITOCHU Corp. (Tokyo, Japan) to provide a 10 kW HyPM fuel cell power module for a demonstration project in Mie Prefecture, Japan. Hitachi Zosen Corp. (Osaka, Japan) will also participate in this project as the overall technical supervisor and supplier of electrolysis equipment.

The project, funded by the Government of Mie Prefecture and Yokkaichi City, will combine Hydrogenics' fuel cell power module expertise and engineering support; Hitachi Zosen's technology and expertise in electrolyzers, system integration and packaging; and ITOCHU's expertise in business development and project management. Itochu will take delivery of the power module in June 2004.

One of the aims of the project is to demonstrate a zero-emission energy system based on renewable energy. An electrolyzer will produce hydrogen on site using electricity from existing solar photovoltaic panels. The hydrogen will then be stored and used to fuel Hydrogenics' HyPM 10 power module during hours of peak electricity demand.
