June 27, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Hybrid Technologies Inc. (Berkeley, CA), a developer of lithium-powered products, in a joint venture with the University of California, Berkeley, School of Engineering, has completed a solar hybrid vehicle that will compete in the upcoming cross-country American Solar Challenge 2005, a US Department of Energy race that will take place July 17, 2005. The solar energy "Beam Machine" vehicle will compete with a number of ivy league universities, racing their solar-powered cars north from Austin, TX, over a 10-day, 2,500-mile endurance competition. With students behind the wheels, the solar cars will travel through the United States and Canada to the finish line in Calgary.

Hybrid Technologies spokesperson Holly Roseberry stated, "The solar-lithium vehicle that will cross our continent without the need of any pollutants will be a very proud moment in our company's history. Our engineers have created a "full" circle with respect to advanced alternate energy, giving Hybrid Technologies an opportunity to affect not only how we move, but also how we live."
